As people rely more and more on social media to get their news, the filter bubble becomes increasingly problematic. In this workshop, students learn how to evaluate whether a news site is reliable. This group activity takes about 30 minutes and can be used for many different audiences by adjusting the examples used.

I've used this very successfully with my freshman comp classes. In our setting, students usually do have their topics when they come in and we just have them use the discovery search engine, so I adjusted the worksheet: Part 1: Your keywords. (pass the sheet to neighbor) Part 2: Identify synonyms for the keywords in Part 1 (pass the sheet to new neighbor) Part 3: Try different combinations of keywords from Part 2 in the database and record how many results you get. (Return sheet to original owner. ) Part 4: Use the search strategies developed by your classmates to find 1 article you can use to answer your research question. I really enjoyed how interactive this was! Thanks for sharing.
